A little disappointed at first - getting to like it now! - 23 Sep 2003

I change my mobile every year and have stuck with Nokia for the last three years as I have been really pleased with all their features eg they look good, are fairly small but not too dinky, have a great selection of ring tones that sound really good (and that's to a music teacher, they are better than some other phone ring tones I've heard) texting has been much easier and better on my Nokias too, for example, my sister's phone would only allow 170? ish characters when writing a text message and my last Nokia gave you a whacking 500! Great for people like me who really like to get value out of my texting. Anyway, to the 3510i: I was really pleased with the appearance of my phone- a metallicy midnight blue, it is quite a good size, fairly small but a bit bigger than my old 3410. I was looking forward to playing with all the polyphonic ringtones but was very disappointed to find there weren't many, and even the standard ringtones - again there weren't many and they weren't as good as my old Nokia! You have to download them; I haven't needed to before, I was well satisfied with the selection already there on the other phones. I was looking forward to the colour screen also but when the phone goes onto the screensaver/timeout mode the screen goes very dark and you can't see it very well at all( I can see my other phone display when the backlighting has gone off and it goes onto screensaver). When the display is lit up and you're pressing buttons, yes the colour screen is great and looks much better, it looks naff to look at my old 3410 screen now but not many preset logos, you'll need to download what you want. At least it still has all my other favourite features such as predictive text/calculator/alarm clock/ currency converter etc. so that's good. I was expecting quite a few polyphonic ringtones and graphics/clipart etc. as on my other phone but better as it's a newer model, fair enough, if you want more specific tunes etc. i accept you have to download them but with this phone you haven't really got a lot to start with and you need to download everything which is a bit daunting if you're a bit of a techophobe like me. Anyway, plucked up the courage and downloaded some tunes from the Nokia website and it was easy and pretty painless and they sound fantastic ( i feel that the maximum ring tone volume could still be a bit higher than it is though). So I suppose to sum up: this phone is for you if you really want to customise your phone and don't want valuable space/memory taken up by factory set ones. Once you do get some polyphonic ringtones you like onto it it really does sound impressive and very COOL! I even found another polyphonic ringtone website where there was Bach's fugue in Dminor to download and it really sounded like a real pipe organ- I think I'm getting to like this phone now.
